The hero is an Irish immigrant who took the place of a drafted New Englander to fight for the Union. He was severely scarred physically and mentally and suffering from shell shock. Working as a lighthouse keeper and becoming a recluse are his ways of coping.

The heroine, Abbey, has been blind since birth but sees the world through the intricate carvings that her father brings back from Lighthouse Island when he delivers supplies. She is curious to meet
the man who carves them.
